A woman must confront her sense of right and wrong when the one person she loves most is accused of an unimaginable crime. From the New York Times best-selling author of Need to Know....

A strange sensation runs through me, a feeling that I don't know this person in front of me, even though he matters more to me than anyone ever has.

Stephanie Maddox works her dream job policing power and exposing corruption within the FBI. Getting here has taken her nearly two decades of hard work, laser focus, and personal sacrifices - the most important, she fears, being a close relationship with her teenage son, Zachary. A single parent, Steph's missed a lot of school events, birthdays, and vacations with her boy - but the truth is, she would move heaven and earth for him, including protecting him from an explosive secret in her past. It just never occurred to her that Zachary would keep secrets of his own.

One day while straightening her son's room, Steph is shaken to discover a gun hidden in his closet. A loaded gun. Then comes a knock at her front door - a colleague on the domestic terrorism squad, who utters three devastating words "It's about Zachary."

So begins a compulsively listenable thriller of deception and betrayal, as Stephanie fights to clear her son's name, only to expose a shadowy conspiracy that threatens to destroy them both - and bring a country to its knees. Packed with shocking twists and intense family drama, Keep You Close is an electrifying exploration of the shattering consequences of the love that binds - and sometimes blinds - a mother and her child.

"Propulsive.... an adrenaline-fueled narrative that will leave readers wanting more.... Equal parts conspiracy thriller and paranoia tale, Cleveland's latest exploits the distance between parents and teenagers while exploring the lines a patriot will cross to protect kin." (Publishers Weekly)

"Cleveland excels at twisting her plots so tightly that the 'big reveal' in the end truly is a surprise." (Kirkus Reviews)

The multiple New York Times bestselling author and Harvard-MIT educated women’s health expert delivers a revolutionary 40-day program to reconnect the brain and body to prevent and reverse the myriad symptoms and diseases afflicting millions of women.

Do you struggle to lose weight or to fall and stay asleep at night?
Do you feel lethargic and a depressed?
Do you endure irregularity or other digestive problems?
Do you want to feel better and happier and to maximize your health and longevity?

Dr. Sara Gottfried has the answer. Your health problems, she reveals, are in your head—caused by a malfunction in the connection between your brain and your body. Brain health is a powerful indicator of overall health and well-being. While our thoughts can affect our physical health, what we do to our body also has a lasting impact on our brains. The relationship between the body and the brain is necessary to function at our best today and for the rest of our lives. Brain Body Diet 40 Days to a Lean Calm Energized and Happy Self edition by Sara Gottfried Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • I’m just diving into Dr Sara Gottfrieds new book and couldn’t wait to write something about it. It’s yet another evolution of her work and thinking as she uncovers the mysteries of women’s bodies - peri menopause and beyond! The brain body connection is like a magic key that we’ve all been looking for. As a post menopausal woman I’m managing all the changes pretty well but still not where I’d like to be. My body is so different to how it was in my 30s and 40s. Dr Sara is giving us the pathway to truly get our body and mind back and reset. This book gives us all the science and the protocols to achieve our dreams and protect us from the dreaded aging diseases of dimentia and the like. I can’t wait to finish it and start the protocol. Would highly recommend reading if you are trying to navigate your way through peri menopause and beyond.
  • Filled with lots information, takes a long time to get to the point, wish there was a section where you could just get the “what to eat and do” (it could be in there but there is over 300 pages to go through to find it) and go back and read the ”science behind it” when and if you wanted to. I really want to give this a try but I am losing interest while trying to find the parts of what to really do.
  • Dr Sara is on the leading edge of women's health and Brain Body Diet takes us farther into understanding what it takes to be truly healthy in body, mind and spirit. She writes extensively on clearing out toxins from the brain and how to reset our body weight set point. This gives me so much hope that I'm not destined to become a fat old matron as the years pass.
Dr Gottfried is an inspired researcher and makes the science behind her protocol understandable. And the footnotes - hundreds of them if you lean in that direction. -)
I'm a big fan and will continue to be. And I'm going to start a book club for this book so that some friends and I can be on this 40-day (and beyond) journey together.
  • Dr. Sara Gottfried delivers another home run! This book had me captivated to learn more about the connection of the Brain with the Body. As I'm aging, I'm eager to gain a deeper understanding of steps that I can take on my own to improve my health. This book will continue to be a source of reference for me through the years by stuffing it with notes and post-it tags! Thank you, Dr. Sara Gottfried, for making women's health important to the individual and sharing ways that we can take our health into our own hands!
  • Who better than Dr. Sara Gottfried to help us better understand our struggles, especially as we all age. There are so many connections between our brains and body that we need to comprehend. Beyond providing the most up to date information and insights, Dr. Gottfried gives us a scientifically backed 40 day protocol that we all can do, and must do. Each day we're overwhelmed not only with life struggles, but in reading and deciphering the conflicting health, diet and medical information behind what steps we can effectively take on our own to fight weight gain, our set point, Alzheimer's and dimentia, stress and burnout. Grab a copy of this book and you'll find a kind, warm, scientific and well research guiding voice through the confusion.
  • This is the most inconsistent and disorganized book I have ever read. Sara Gottfried's other books were very educational and useful.
  • This book has loads of terrific information, but I was dismayed by the title... I think people who might otherwise read (and love) it will bypass it as “just another diet book.” It’s SO not that... it’s more a way of life... or it should be, if you want to get healthy and stay that way.
  • If you are tired of trying to lose weight, get hormones in balance, or cope with anxiety or depression, Dr. Sara Gottfried’s new book has answers. She is the foremost authority on all things related to women’s health. I believe this is her best book -- and I give it my highest recommendation.

***

Mon entrejambe commence sérieusement à me serrer.

What happens when an undocumented teen mother takes on the U.S. immigration system?

When Aida Hernandez was born in 1987 in Agua Prieta, Mexico, the nearby U.S. border was little more than a worn-down fence. Eight years later, Aida’s mother took her and her siblings to live in Douglas, Arizona. By then, the border had become one of the most heavily policed sites in America.

Undocumented, Aida fought to make her way. She learned English, watched Friends, and, after having a baby at sixteen, dreamed of teaching dance and moving with her son to New York City. But life had other plans. Following a misstep that led to her deportation, Aida found herself in a Mexican city marked by violence, in a country that was not hers. To get back to the United States and reunite with her son, she embarked on a harrowing journey. The daughter of a rebel hero from the mountains of Chihuahua, Aida has a genius for survival—but returning to the United States was just the beginning of her quest.

Taking us into detention centers, immigration courts, and the inner lives of Aida and other daring characters, The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez reveals the human consequences of militarizing what was once a more forgiving border. With emotional force and narrative suspense, Aaron Bobrow-Strain brings us into the heart of a violently unequal America. He also shows us that the heroes of our current immigration wars are less likely to be perfect paragons of virtue than complex, flawed human beings who deserve justice and empathy all the same.

The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez A Border Story eBook Aaron BobrowStrain Reviews :

The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez A Border Story eBook Aaron BobrowStrain Reviews

  • Aida's story illuminates the immigrant experience at our Southern borders and the vulnerability of women who seek permanent and legal immigrant status in the United States.

I empathized with Aida who endured the unimaginable and survived.

The House on Mango Street changed Aida Hernandez's life. In her darkest hours, she remembered the words of hope "I have gone a long way to come back."

Aida wanted to dance. She wanted to finish high school and go to college. She wanted to become a therapist. She wanted to give her son a good home. She wanted to love and be loved. Her hopes were just like yours and mine.

But Aida's life held more horrors than any one body should be able to endure. She had survived even death but suffered from crippling CPTSD--Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She came from a legacy of abuse but a knife attack tipped her over the edge. It only took one mistake, a $6 mistake, to remove Aida from her son and family, locked up for months in a women's prison. They were not given tampons, or enough toilet paper, or adequate wholesome food. There were not enough beds or blankets to keep warm.

And that is when Aida saw The House on Mango Street on the prison library shelf and it started her reclamation and a life of helping the other women with her.

Aaron Bobrow-Strain's book The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez brings to life unforgettable women, and through their stories, explores the failure of Prevention Through Deterrence which posits that if the journey is horrific enough people will not come. Women suffer the most in this system.

He shows how American economic and political policies and the desire for cheap labor created the influx of illegal immigrants.

Immigrants in detention centers are treated like hardened criminals with shackles, solitary confinement, lack of medical care, meager inedible food, and a scarcity of hygiene supplies. They have no legal rights. They are provided no legal counsel. Border Patrol and detention centers have created jobs and business--paid for by the government.

Who are the people seeking refuge in America? What drives them from their homeland? What options are available for legal immigration? What happens to those who are apprehended? This book will answer all your questions. But you may not like the answers.

Justice. How many times have we forgotten this value?

The proceeds from this book will be shared between Aida Hernandez, the Chiricahua Community Health Centers to support emergency services for people dealing with domestic violence or sexual assault, and the author to offset costs of writing the book. Which for me means an instant add to my "to buy" list..

I thank the publisher who provided a free ebook through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
  • Sad, timely, and the sort of book that could help people understand the humans behind the pictures on tv. Aida's life should not have gone the way it does but she's a determined woman. Coming from nothing, she built a life and then had it yanked from under her. She never gives up on her dream. The idea that making it hard will stop people from coming is inane. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. More power to Aida and those like her.
  • This is a great story, although heartbreaking. It follows Aida Hernandez, and her fight for a decent life after leaving Mexico for America.

The writing in the book is great, and the story flows well. I couldn't put it down!
